What is the difference between pet insurance and a pet wellness plan?

What is the difference between pet insurance and a pet wellness plan?

Pet insurance and pet wellness plans are two different options to help make your pet's health care more affordable. There are important differences between them that are important to understand if you want to get to most coverage possible for your pet's care. Here, our Liberty Lake vets explain more about wellness plans and pet insurance.

Protecting Your Pet's Future

Pet insurance and wellness plans both offer financial benefits, but do so very differently. It's important that you understand what kinds of services your pet will and won't be covered for with either so you aren't unexpectedly left paying out of pocket.

What is a wellness plan?

Wellness plans make it easier for you to cover the cost of routine veterinary care and, unlike pet insurance, you only pay for the treatments and services you use throughout the year.

Wellness plans let you adopt a proactive approach to your pet's veterinary care by paying manageable monthly fees rather than a large sum at each routine visit. These plans help your vet spot early signs of any conditions or diseases your pet may have before they become more serious, and more expensive to treat.

What does a wellness plan cover?

Generally, wellness plans cover routine vet care including wellness exams, parasite preventives, annual blood testing, and vaccines.

Maintaining and improving the standard of care for your pet's overall health during their lifetime is much easier since these plans spread out the cost of their routine care.

What is pet insurance?

Should your pet require emergency veterinary care, pet insurance helps you to take care of the cost of treatment.

The fact is that emergency care and treatments of complex illnesses like diabetes or cancer can become quite expensive. If you have pet insurance, it means you will have help covering the cost of bills for conditions and accidents that fall within your pet's insurance policy.

What does pet insurance cover?

Pet insurance policies differ, but they generally cover treatment for illnesses or emergency treatment required after accidents. Some policies may also include prescription medications and the treatment of hereditary and congenital conditions as well as orthopedic conditions.

How do I choose which option to buy?

Making sure that you know how wellness plans and pet insurance are able to benefit you and your pet can help you to determine which is right for you and your pet's needs. Some pet owners choose to adopt one or the other, while others subscribe to both in order to make sure their pet has total coverage.

If you aren't sure which coverage is right for you, ask your vet. They can help you decide based on your pet's particular needs and concerns.
